Cordoba is the capital of Muslim Spain, a city where history has left indelible marks. All the different cultures that have existed in the city have left their traces on its personality, making it what it is today: an open, intense, lively city.
Cordoba has more World Heritage Sites than any other city. In addition to the famous Mosque-Cathedral and the Medina Azahara, the city is full of monuments, historical architecture, courtyards, gardens, Arab baths and thousands of unforgettable spots to lose yourself in.
Bathed by the Guadalquivir River, the city has an enviable location, surrounded by olive groves, vineyards, countryside and the Sierra Morena and Serranías Subbéticas mountains.
Saint Raphael the Archangel, found in Judaism, Islam and Christianity, is the custodian of the city. The intense popular devotion to Saint Raphael, since the city suffered an outbreak of the plague in the 17th century, has gradually filled its streets with sculptures honouring him as the city’s saviour. These sculptures are called Triumphs of Saint Raphael and there are 11 in total, scattered around the city.
Cordoba is full of charming spots, packed with history. Its architecture reflects all the civilisations that have left their mark on the city. Roman bridges alongside Arab baths and Baroque buildings.
But on top of this monumental heritage, there is also contemporary architecture and landscaping. The River Balcony and the headquarters of the Chamber of Commerce are just two examples of the noteworthy contemporary architecture the city has to offer.
