Madrid’s architecture reflects its history. When Madrid was made the capital of Spain in the 16th century, a period of grand constructions kicked off, with buildings like Casa de la Villa in the Herreran, classical style preferred by the reigning dynasty of the House of Austria.

With the arrival of the House of Bourbon, Madrid also welcomed in the Baroque style in the Royal Palace and Neoclassicism in Puerta de Alcalá and Museo del Prado.

Romanticism and Historicism in the 19th century  brought about a new style in Madrid: Neo-Mudéjar.

Moving into the 20th century, we find examples of Modern and Rationalist architecture that paved the way for modern skyscrapers like the Gate of Europe towers and the Four Towers, which dominate the skyline today.
