Tourism that Adds Up: Towards a More Responsible, Sustainable, and Valued Tourism in Spain

At Hesperia World, we proudly join the “Turismo que Suma” campaign, an initiative led by Exceltur that seeks to build a new narrative around tourism. A narrative that is fairer, more realistic, and hopeful, highlighting all that well-managed tourism brings: economic development, social well-being, and the protection of natural and cultural heritage.

What is “Tourism that Adds Up”?

Tourism that Adds Up was created in response to an obvious need: to improve the perception of tourism in Spain, especially in destinations where overcrowding or pressure on resources has caused tensions with residents.

The campaign proposes a more balanced and sustainable model, in which the benefits of tourism are shared by everyone: visitors, residents, employees, local communities, and businesses.

More than 100 organizations have already joined this initiative, sharing a common vision: a tourism that cares, contributes, and builds. A tourism that adds up.

The Five Commitments of Tourism that Adds Up

At the core of this campaign is a manifesto with over 80 best practices organized around five key pillars that help transform tourism into a true positive force:

  • Tourist saturation: reduce the impact in overcrowded areas and promote better territorial distribution of tourism.

  • Gentrification: protect local identity and ensure harmonious coexistence with residents.

  • Quality employment: improve working conditions and attract talent to the tourism sector.

  • Environmental sustainability: efficiently manage natural resources and reduce the environmental footprint.

  • Good tourism governance: encourage collaborative, inclusive, and long-term planning.

A New Narrative for Regenerative Tourism

One of the main goals of the campaign is to build a renewed narrative about tourism. It aims to highlight not only the challenges but also the solutions, transformative projects, and the positive impact that tourism generates when managed with awareness and responsibility.

At Hesperia World, we firmly believe in this vision of regenerative tourism: tourism that improves the environment in which it operates, revitalizes local economies, creates dignified employment, and promotes culture and people’s well-being.

Our Commitment: Tourism that Leaves a Positive Mark

For years, at Hesperia World, we have committed to a hospitality model aligned with the values of Tourism that Adds Up. Our way of understanding tourism is based on three fundamental pillars: guest experience, environmental sustainability, and connection with local communities.

Environmental Sustainability in Hotel Management

We commit to responsible resource management in all our hotels.

  • We eliminate single-use plastics.

  • We incorporate energy-saving technology.

  • We use local and seasonal products in our kitchens.

Tourism that Benefits the Local Community

We strive for real integration in the destinations where we operate.

  • We collaborate with local brands, artists, and producers.

  • We create authentic cultural and gastronomic experiences.

  • We promote the economy and identity of the neighborhood.

Quality Employment and Professional Development

We believe in tourism that also brings value to our teams.

  • We encourage stable labor relations.

  • We promote continuous training.

  • We foster pride in belonging to the sector.

Conscious and Purposeful Tourism
Initiatives like Holistic Active Retreat at La Manga Club or the local and urban approach of Hesperia Barri Gòtic are examples of our commitment to a more balanced, human, and transformative tourism, focused on well-being and respect for the environment.

Tourism that Adds Up, Tourism with Purpose

We are convinced that tourism can and should be a positive force for people and territories.
That is why we join this campaign and strengthen our commitment to a model that not only generates economic value but also builds community, preserves the environment, and promotes meaningful experiences.

Because tourism that leaves a mark should leave a positive mark.
